Earth Day 2008
Learning event - What happened?: For a period of 24 hours the Edtechtalk team joined forces to webcast live a program dedicated to Earth Day. Matt Montagne called it webcastathon. And it was! It was a magnificent experience.
What did I learn?: I learn how to webcast with a mac. This was the first time I streamed with a Mac and that I hold the streaming for sucha long period of time. I was nervous, but I also also very excited about being able to do so. People had trusted me with that job, and I had to do my best to succeed! If felt good. Many thanks to Jose Rodriguez, Elderbob and Doug Symington for being there during my stream hour and making this experience such a memorable one.
What else do I need to know?: Throughout the day, we had contributions from different school and even different countries. 4 different languages were used during this event (English, German, Portuguese and Spanish). It was great fun listening to the voices of those who decided to get involved. The highlight was definitely to enable students to develop their own voice. They were excellent webcasters. Their projects and performances were pure inspiration.
How will the learning event change me?: I am more and more convinced of the power of the students’ voice. This is the way forward. We have to create more opportunities for learners to find their voices and express themselves. In the process we will learn with them all. The technology comes to add value in the way we - as educators- can empower students to learn while connecting to a wider world and sharing their own perspectives and realities.
